Tutors: Sarah Nicholson and Emma Cowan
Spend a day immersed in the quiet, satisfying craft of making your own tools for drawing and writing.
You will learn how to shape feathers, wood and plant stems into functional dip pens and quills suitable for writing, line drawing, calligraphy, and illustration. Together we will create richly toned inks from locally sourced plant materials, to use with your hand-made pens.
These processes connect you to a long lineage of artists and makers. The inks you create—earthy, nuanced, and alive with variation— echo those used for centuries, including by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Vincent van Gogh. We will share methods to create your own modifiers from iron, deepening tones and extending the expressive range of your inks.
